Surname Variations

FamilySearch has wonderful indexes and images that help many of us enhance our family history. I’ve seen a lot of interesting surname variations in my day. None-the-less I was a bit surprised at some I found via FamilySearch when searching birth records of Cook County, Illinois.

My goal was to find birth record images for the children of Fredrick Gleim and Mary Geiger a collateral line of my late hubby. Mother Geiger’s birthday book and a Gleim cousin provided the following births for Fred and Mary’s children, all born in Chicago:

Hilda Gleim, born 25 Dec 1886
Carrie Gleim, born 2 November 1888
Charles Gleim, born 8 March 1891
Margaret Pauline Gleim, born 9 Sep 1893
Marie Thresa Gleim, born 3 Oct 1900
Ruth Gleim, born about 1904
“Illinois, Cook County Birth Certificates, 1878-1922” have been digitized and indexed by Family Search.
1) Search for the surname Gleim: ten results for a parent with the surname Gleim, but none for Fredrick or Fred Gleim (or any variation thereof).

2) Search for a parent named Mary Geiger: There were a good number of hits. Scrolling through these I found several meaningful options recorded below in the order they appeared in the result list.

  • Record Index: Mary Geiger and spouse, Fred Glenn (Glenn is an error made by the indexer)
Record abstract: Parents: Fred Gleim, age 32, stonecutter; and Mary Geiger, age 31 (their nationality and birthplace was not recorded). Birth of male Gleim, 8 March 1891. 4th birth for the mother. Birth place and residence of mother: 123 Freemont St. [FHL film #1287910; digital folder #4262698; and image #1146; reference number 4930] – this would be Charles
  • Record Index: Mary Geiger and spouse, Fred Klein
Record abstract: Parents: Fred Klein, age 29, born in Germany, mercener; and Mary Geiger, age 28, born in Germany [note: this is not correct, she was born in Illinois]. Female Klein, 2 Nov 1888. 3rd birth for mother. Birth place and residence of mother: 123 Freemont St. [FHL film #1287881; digital folder #4031033; and image #1717; reference number 12452] – this would by Carrie
  • Record Index: Mary Geiger and spouse, Fred Klein
Record abstract: Parents: Fred Klein, 27, American; and Mary Geiger, 26, American. Female Klein, b. 25 Dec 1886. 2nd child of mother. Birth place and residence of mother: 123 Freemont St. [FHL film #1287860; digital folder #4031012; and image #1536; reference number 1004] – this would be Hilda

There were no additional births for other children of Mary Geiger and an appropriate spouse.

FamilySearch database “Illinois, Cook County Birth Registers, 1871-1915” provided similar information (I’m providing a very brief abstract here). Again the births are listed in the order they appeared in the index.

1) Search for the surname Gleim:

  • Record Index: Fred Gleim and Mary Geiger (also Mary Geiger and Fred Gleim)
Record abstract: Male Gleim, 9 Mar 1891, born at 123 Freemont St. – Charles

2) Search for the name Mary Geiger

  • Record Index: Mary Geiger and Fred Klein
Record abstract: Female Klein, 2 Nov 1888, born at 123 Freemont St.  – Carrie
  • Record Index: Mary Geiger and Fred Glenis
Record abstract: Female Glenis, 9 Sep 1893 born at 207 Sheffield Ave. – Margaret
  • Record Index: Mary Geiger and Fred Klein
Record abstract: Female Klein, 25 Dec 1886 – Hilda

There were no additional births for other children of Mary Geiger and an appropriate spouse.

More study is needed on the Gleim family. It is now apparent that I need to expand the search to the surname Klein as well.
