Family Recipe Friday: Mother Geiger’s Hermits

Mother Geiger gave me this recipe for Hermits, telling me that they were one of Charlie’s favorites. The cookies had been a favorite in the Walking family for a long time. Mother Geiger was born Elsie Walkling, daughter of Henry and Lizzie (Feurer) Walking, in Ottawa, Illinois. She married Howard Geiger in 1922.

Grind 1/2 cup Currants and one cup Walnuts
Cream one cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine and 1/2 cup butter.
Add 3 cups dark brown sugar, one cup at a time.
Add 3 eggs – one at a time.
Beat the butter, sugar and eggs together.  Set aside.

Sift together….3 1/2 cups flower, one tsp baking soda, 2 tsp cinnamon, one tsp nutmeg, 1/2 tsp cloves, 1/2 tsp allspice.
Add currants and nuts to flour mixture.
Add to batter and mix well.

Cover and chill overnight.

Next day…… (375 degree oven)
Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet.
Flatten with fork.
Brush top with mixture of one egg and one tablespoon water.
Bake at 375 degrees until lightly browned on edges (12 to 15 minutes). Always check on first pan. They burn easily!
Let cookies cool one to three minutes, then remove from pan to rack to cool.
